Civil War letter of Gen. Leonidas Polk, 1863 June 5.

Signed letter written by Gen. Leonidas Polk to his brother, who was trapped in Vicksburg during the siege, denounces the conduct of the "Goths and Vandals from the north." The letter continues, "The Lord rewards them according to their works.... I firmly believe he will dispose of our case in the way that shall be best for us and all the world. The light before me guides me to the conclusion that it is best for us to be freed from dominance of the infidel horde of [?] and [?] now attempting to despoil us of our lands and trample down his altars, and I believe firmly he will see that we are delivered."
